Football/UK: West Ham Reluctant On Eto’o Because of Age
Cameroon international and national team captain Samuel Eto’o Fils is still without a club since his release from Chelsea at the end of last season. Several reports suggest that the striker’s age (33 years) may be the root cause. Last week, Eto’o Fils’ agent Claudio Vigarelli met with West Ham manager Sam Allardyce in London to negotiate a contract for the ex-Barcelona forward, who has had offers from the Middle East, the USA and Turkey. “There has been a lot of talk about Samuel Eto’o. From our point of view the chairman was perhaps looking at a younger player. Samuel is still available and we have decided he should be considered at some stage if we’re not successful [in signing a younger player],” West Ham manager Allardyce said over the weekend. While West Ham have already made a significant outlay on a younger striker this summer, spending £12 million on the Ecuadorian Enner Valencia, British media reported on Tuesday that Samuel Eto’o has emerged as a surprise target for Sunderland. With an ardent desire to stay within the confines of the Premier League, Eto’o has declined potentially more lucrative offers from Besiktas and the Middle East. And Sunderland could be the perfect fit, with the Black Cats looking for striking reinforcements whilst their protracted move for Fabio Borini rumbles on.
