Athletics: Mountain Race Of Hope: Government Uses Queen of Mountain As Bait For Peace In Anglophone Crisis
This year’s edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope falls within the context of crisis rocking the two English speaking regions and the government of Cameroon is now using retired Queen of the Mountain Sarah Liengu Etonge as bait to capture the minds of Anglophones who are massively attending or watching this edition of the race. The seven times champion comes out of her retirement to announce her participation but adds that “It is for Peace and Unity.”
The woman whose statue was poorly erected by same government in 2006 and immediately brought down by Buea Youths is now seen as a unifying figure but can it go beyond lips and participation to bring back peace and Unity when underneath the race lies litany of problems plaguing the two English speaking regions with massive arrest, shootings, killings and imprisonment.
Observers hold that no matter the popularity of the Queen of the Mountain and the efforts made by Government to call for peace and activities in schools to return to normalcy things will continue to be worst if the highhandedness of the government on the population is not withdrawn, if those arrested are not freed, if massive arrests are not stopped, if intimidation, phone checks are not stopped above all a special message from the head of state Paul Biya as reclaimed by several persons including North West CPDM Parliamentarians and Senators.
